Discovering Our World, Developing Our Skills

My students need a variety of 9 science and discovery materials to investigate light and color, magnets, sand and snow, and items from nature.

Ms. Royall Woodside Early Childhood Center
Beaverton, OR Grades PreK-2

Exploring our World, Developing our Skills I am an Early Childhood Special Education teacher working with preschool aged children with a variety of disabilities. All of our children have special needs, most exhibiting severe delays in multiple areas of development. These children desperately need a variety of learning materials and ample opportunities to acquire and practice new skills. Young children learn through hands on exploration and manipulation with a rich variety of materials. While at play with interesting and unique items, children develop skills beyond simply learning about the items themselves. Play affords children opportunities to develop language, problem solving, an understanding of cause and effect, social skills, and many other skills essential to their development and future ability to learn. At the present moment, my classroom consists mostly of very simple cause and effect plastic toys, most of which produce some sort of song or light when activated. Though these types of toys often entertain my students, they offer only the most limited opportunities for children to expand their play, problem solve, or to engage in social interaction with peers. The variety of materials available within my school is very limited and there are no resources to expand our toy and art library. Though our staff members are highly creative and motivated in providing as many new and interesting materials as we can, our children deserve more. Offering these special needs children materials that require more than just repeatedly pushing a button will present invaluable opportunities to practice a variety of skills imperative to their development. In order to provide my students with novel and exciting learning experiences, I would like to create an exploration and discovery center within my classroom. This area will include science and nature materials, a light board and color manipulatives, and various natural sensory materials. Through exploring with the light board and color paddles, or experimenting with magnets, my students will have opportunities to investigate true cause and effect. They will have exciting new experiences that will promote language through commenting and questions and they will be doing this as a group, therefore practicing essential social skills. Motivating these wonderful children to learn, problem solve, and enjoy one another will be an essential step in their path to education and life.
