This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Speech Language Therapist that works with hearing impaired and PDD/Autistic children in a very special pre-k/k setting. Our special needs students are within the same classrooms as typical children. All of the children in the classroom are encouraged to learn sign language. We also want to teach families sign language so they can interact with their children better at home.
The hearing impaired and autistic children in our school face enormous difficulties communicating with other children and adults. These children are learning to talk but need another way to interact with friends and teachers. We want to teach all of the children sign language so if a child does not have the words they need, they could sign things like "come play with me" or What do you have for lunch?".
I would like a laminator and laminating materials, so I could make and place pictures of the sign and the written word on or around many of the things in a typical classroom. This would include number and letter cards, educational materials, toys, and playground equipment. This way children and adults could easily see the sign on a card, copy it and learn the sign as they work and play. We would also like to include families in this project. I have also included some additional sign language materials to help everyone learn to sign.
Your help with this project will make a significant difference in helping children who are often quiet and unable to express themselves be part of a typical classroom. In addition, other children in the classroom will learn a new way talk with new friends.
