Chair Pockets To Keep Our Materials Neat And Organized

I teach first grade in a charter school of primarily Somali refugees. The students speak varying degrees of English, but very few of the parents speak the language.

I was hired on Monday afternoon. On Tuesday morning I walked into an empty classroom full of wide-eyed, eager first graders. We now have round tables and chairs, and have been told that shelves are on their way!(Our text books are still in boxes and we don't even have a class library yet. That will be my next project!)

Chair pockets would provide a safe place for students to store their daily writing and math journals, spelling workbooks, homework folders, and incentive tickets. As refugees, many of these children have few belongings of their own. Chair pockets would give them something to call their own while in school. Additionally, this will allow for more instructional time, as I won't need to spend so much time passing out and collecting materials.
