Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school is located in an extremely high-poverty, low-income neighborhood. I teach at an elementary school, all subjects, to a class of adorable, eager, enthusiastic second graders. Daily, I try to encourage my children to read independently, especially at home, or on their downtime. However, often many of my students do not have any books at home, nor a quiet place in which they can sit comfortably, without interruption and read. One student came to me and informed me that at home, he often reads and does his homework in a closet so his younger siblings can not interrupt him! This is his only refuge, as it is for many of my students who are living in such unfortunate conditions.

Many of my students are also living in temporary foster homes, and over-crowded living conditions, where there is little time nor space for the children to comfortably read at home. By providing my students with a peaceful, comfortable "refuge", a cozy reading corner filled with a rich assortment of literature, I believe will demonstrate to them that reading is an excellent activity to engage in and can be both relaxing and fun!

I already have a bookshelf with a plethora of literature for the children to enjoy, much of which is purchased out of my own pocket. However, I feel that providing the children with colorful beanbag chairs will provide them with the "cozy reading area" needed but are not able to get at home, due to circumstances beyond their control. Many of my students love to read and be read to, and this way it will make it more enjoyable and enticing to them! I feel that these beanbag chairs will help my students associate reading with a relaxing, exciting pastime rather than a forced task.

By providing my students with beanbag chairs, you will be helping instill a love of reading and learning, thus, helping the children become more fluent, literate and productive members of society! You will be helping change the future for the better and helping create a safer, successful, better world for all!
