Desperately Seeking the World Wide Web

My students need to have access to computers in my room. A laptop storage cart would help me to build this important resource.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a high school Science teacher in a high-need community. My students are mostly minority and lack the resources needed to be competitive in the present job market.

I showed my students a picture that I downloaded from the Internet. It was a NASA photo of multiple galaxies. My students were unbelievably amazed. They thought that we were the only planetary system here. These are students that are not normally very responsive to learning. We talked for 45 minutes about how the Earth was made and all the possibilities in space. They had no idea. There are so many resources on the Internet that will connect them with information about our world. I am teaching Earth Science this semester and can't wait to introduce them to the ocean and the mountains, etc. They don't have any idea about water resources and treatment. Next semester I will be teaching Biology and, oh, the places we could go.

I spend a lot of time after school searching the Internet for resources. I have found fantastic sites showing caves and meteorology. Interactive sites that could help my students track hurricanes or study earthquakes. They can dive down a hole in the ocean and watch a tsunami. There are virtual trips they can take to study any place or condition imaginable. With each different science I teach, there are amazing places for us to go.

Not only can we travel to places these students can only imagine, I can really help them obtain the computer skills they will be needing as they move forward in today's world. The access to technology at our school is so limited, and while our school is working very hard to provide for the students, there is only so much to spend. Ready access to computers in my classroom would be an invaluable resource to student learning. This computer cart is the first step. Thank you for your interest in making a difference.
