Art Saves Lives! I Ask for a Turning Point, These Books Can.

My students need 27 books about artists, including titles from the "Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists" book series.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a sixth grade transitional bilingual class. The students are high risk, low income, and face unique challenges as English Language Learners. My school is located in an area that is becoming increasingly plagued by gangs and I would love to show them that there is more to life and that knowledge is the answer.

My students need to realize there is more to life than gangs, sadness, violence and destruction. I hope to enrich their minds with fine arts introduced in the series of books I am hoping you will help us obtain.

When I took one of the books from this series to my students, they really connected with the text. First of all the pictures hook them in. They learn that art is great form of expression and that they can and should communicate. The students said it was cool how the artist, Frida Kahlo, never gave up painting, even though she was hurt so badly and was made fun of and often alone. They were able to see that art was a great coping skill, you don't have to be a painter, like the artists that are presented in the series. They can enjoy art, they can create other art, spend their time doing creative activities instead of hanging out with the gangs and running the streets where there are drugs and shootings. They also spent their 20 minutes of computer looking up other artists. During a class presentation, one student said "I also liked Leonardo Divinci reminds me of someone." After some pressure from the other students he smiled and said, "Okay, Leonardo Divinci reminds me of me."

You will open up a whole new world for my students with this book series. They will see themselves represented with culture, pride and beauty. They can begin to imagine something other than dropping out of school and spending their days hanging out in the street life of gangs and drugs. Art helped me, personally, I have seen it help others and I hope with your help, we can continue to spread a love and appreciate for art and reading and with that, a love and appreciation of life- despite the living conditions that children in this low income population face daily.
