Going For The Gold: Science In Action

My students need 7 hands-on science materials, such as a fossil kit and lab equipment, to prepare for this year's enriching Science Olympiad competition.

Who loves science? We do! I am the librarian and Science Olympiad coach at a k-8 public charter school in North Carolina. Our school focuses on Expeditionary Learning - learning through hands-on experiences and real-world, practical knowledge. Since we are a public school we do not charge tuition or hand-pick our students, but as a charter school we receive less funding from the state than our traditional counterparts.

Science Olympiad provides the perfect opportunity for our middle school students to challenge themselves in applied, experiential science. Instead of just reading about how investigators use fingerprints and fiber samples to solve a crime, the students become the detective and solve a mystery in Science Crime Busters. Students can study lift and drag in airplanes, but Science Olympiad allows them to build and test their own rubber-band powered planes in Wright Stuff. Twenty of our middle school students have chosen to join our team this year. That’s one-fifth of our 6th -8th grade student body! Every year the 23 events in which we compete change - great news for our team, bad news for our budget. We enjoy challenging ourselves and competing against the larger schools in our region, but we struggle to provide the same level of resources offered by traditional or privately-funded schools.

Through the purchase of balsa wood and a safe cutting tool, a fossil kit, a quality metric scale, and a physics kit our students can actually experience science beyond a textbook. They learn not only the facts, but also the process – how to be motivated and independent learners, how to grow from their mistakes, how to respectfully question themselves and others, and how to be good competitors. Other members of our school community will also benefit from the supplies. Since our school serves kindergarten through 8th grade, our second graders will enjoy examining the fossil kit and 5th grade will love the opportunity to experience hands-on physics experiments. While the two team members working on Scrambler are calibrating their egg-carrying car in the hallway, elementary students inevitably want to watch and learn and offer advice. They become our future Science Olympiad team without even realizing it!

You can help this dedicated group of students compete on a more equal footing with our competitors. You can help show our students that we don’t have to have money to be mighty and we don’t have to be big to be powerful. Together we can inspire these budding scientists!
