Listening Center

My students need a Listening Center that includes a CD/Cassette Player.

I teach first grade at a high poverty school. More than 90% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Many of them are special needs children.

My first graders are eager to learn to read but most of them lack books at home. Many of them live in single parent households or with other relatives. The parents/guardians work hard to make ends meet. Money is tight. Many work long hours and some have two or more jobs. When asked, "Who reads to you at home?" most of my students answer "nobody" or "I read to myself."

I am hoping that someone will donate funds for a Listening Center with headphones and a CD/Cassette player. My students love to listen to stories. I know that a Listening Center will captivate their attention and in turn make them want to learn to read. After listening to the stories several times, they will soon be reading along with the reader on the CD or cassette. Repeated reading is a great strategy for increasing fluency and vocabulary. Of course, it is enjoyable at the same time.

Your help will ensure that my students have stories being read to them. This will certainly put a gleam in their eyes and a smile on their faces. They will make greater gains in reading because of your generosity.
