Ready, Set, Go!

My students need 20 Toddler Safety Helmets.

Mrs. M.
Grades 3-5

I am a Social Worker for the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf in Texas. As a Social Worker I provide services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing children from Pre-K to 5th grade.

It's a beautiful day - the sun is shining, the birds are chirping. What could be more perfect than a bike ride? But Wait! Before a deaf or hard of hearing child pulls their bike out of the garage, safety issues must be addressed. First, the hearing loss of a child creates a major obstacle. Modifications and rules must be addressed. Secondly, a bike helmet is a must!!!

Bike riding is a lot of fun, but accidents happen. Every year, about 300,000 kids go to emergency rooms because of bike injuries. Some of these injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries. A head injury can mean brain injury. That's why it's so important that children WEAR BIKE HELMETS! I teach bike and summer safety by means of social skills lessons and find that many of my students do not have BIKE HELMETS :( Children from low income families find that bike helmets are just low on their parents priority list. So being Deaf or Hard of Hearing plus no BIKE HELMET makes for a very dangerous situation.

Bike helmets are so important that the U.S. government has created safety standards for them. Your help will ensure that some Deaf and Hard of Hearing children who come from low income families will be given an opportunity to have protection for their head and brain in case they fall during their BIKE RIDING ADVENTURES!!! :) Thank you for your consideration of this proposal. Your thoughtfulness will not go unnoticed.
