Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This self contained kindergarten class is a part of a high needs community, who needs your help. My district has seen an influx of English as a Second Language population and has been caught off guard! We are in crisis, trying to meet the needs of students who need more opportunities to hear the language, and we have to do something different.

Our English as Second Language learner population as grown by 700% in 5 years. My class of 16 students has 14 who are ESL. These kids are lacking in the language necessary to be successful. With very few parents speaking English in the home the best chance for these students to hear the language in its correct form is in the classroom. Too many students are coming to school with huge deficits in language, making it more difficult for them to achieve the increasingly high standards on district and state assessments.

Digital recorders have two great purposes. It will provide students with opportunities to listen to language in a variety of ways, including listening to stories, poetry and conversation. They will hear familiar voices of the teachers, their friends and even of themselves (building self esteem.) Using this technology will help students understand and internalize the academic language necessary to be successful. These students do not often have occasions to use technology and this will increase their chances of manipulating technology, in a way that will make them more marketable in the future.

Your donation will increase the students chances to access authentic language. This will give them numerous opportunities to build their language skills and strategies and help them become victorious against the great odds that are set before them.
