Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach art at an early childhood school in Harlem serving approximately 550 children from pre-kindergarten through second grade. The school is an arts based school and all academic subjects are supported by the arts. Each year there is an art show that is based on a theme that the students are learning about in their classrooms. For instance, one year the exhibition space was transformed into a “self-portrait gallery.” Each child in the school created a self-portrait using different media including paint, collage, sculpture, printmaking, etc. In social studies, the students were learning about themselves and their families, and in the writing workshop the children were writing “all about me books.” The self-portrait gallery, therefore, complemented what the children were doing in their classroom. In addition to the students making a self-portrait, they wrote an artist statement to further push their literacy skills. The self-portrait gallery reached across the curriculum and as a result the children were enthusiastic about the gallery coming to life. For the 2008-2009 academic year, the theme of the art show is “community.” In social studies the children are studying various aspects of their community, and learning about what makes up a community. They go on many neighborhood walks to investigate the different aspects of their neighborhood. Children learn about the buildings, architecture, the different kinds of stores and industries, and the people and workers who reside in Harlem. In art, the children will explore these aspects of their community in order to support this in-depth social studies program. Students will create sculptures, paintings, collages, puppets of for example, the building, workers, and the residence of Harlem. Their artwork will be celebrated in the school’s exhibition space where the students’ families and the community members will be invited to view the students’ artwork. The supplies that we need for this project to come to life range from paint to various kinds of paper, paper Mashe paste, beads, sequins, masking tape and clay. The art room reserve of these materials is quickly dwindling, especially in light of the tough economic times and harsh budget cuts. As a result, in order for this vision to come to fruition the art supplies are desperately needed. The total cost of these supplies will be approximately $1200.00 and they will be used by the entire school community. This project has the potential to be extremely meaningful to the children, to the school, and to the community at large. By enabling the children to create meaningful artwork related to their other studies, their learning will be solidified and enhanced, and their appreciation of the value and beauty of art will be developed. In addition, the art show will benefit both the children and the community at large by bringing people together to view the children’s art, thereby enhancing the sense of community for both the children and residence of Harlem.
