Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 2nd grade in a Title I school in Alabama. I have eighteen students in my classroom, eight of which are English Language Learners, one of which is a special needs student.

Listening centers are not a new concept at our school. However, 2nd grade students are expected to make a significant jump from reading 44 words per minute to reading 90 words per minute over the course of the school year. Throughout the state of Alabama, 2nd grade tends to show overall weaknesses in obtaining this considerable increase in words per minute. I would like to implement a listening center with these audio books to improve my students' oral reading fluency.

I have applied for a grant to obtain a new listening station for my classroom (my old one is just not up to par!). My supply of audio books is very limited. Audio books offer students a listening experience as well as a learning experience. The goal of Listening Ears is to enhance comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and language acquisition, as well as overall reading achievement in my classroom. Not only will students master the skill of listening, they are able to hear fluent reading while focusing on the sounds of words. Fun sound effects, music, and narration are fun to listen to and motivating for students. Children will also develop a sense of narrative structure and understanding of language. Stories on tape help them to grasp the rich and various ways in which language conveys meaning.

With your help, my students can reach these significant goals in literacy while listening to stories that are enjoyable to them. I want to make reading fun for my students. Listening to stories is such a great way to motivate and encourage them to embrace literacy!
