My students need 5 QX5 microscopes for our study of plant and animal cells and the five kingdoms in 5th grade science.

I am presently teaching fourth and fifth grade Science in a public school in the US. Our children come from low socio-economic families. The majority of our students have never been to a mall or ridden an escalator.

In fifth grade Science we are studying plant and animal cells and kingdoms. Students have viewed movies on cells, modeled cell diagrams with food and have used the Internet to visit the interactive website Cells Alive. My students are very interested in cells,but our microscopes came over on the Mayflower. The magnification is not that great and most of them use mirrors which have to be adjusted to obtain the light needed to view an object. A few of our microscopes do use batteries to run the light, but then it is a time consuming game to find the right magnification and focus.

QX5 microscopes would be given to each group of students. They could examine their cheek cells and the cells of an onion skin. Also we could take the QX5s outside and use them to study spores, fungi, etc. We could take samples of the water in a nearby stream and examine these samples under the QX5 microscopes. Our viewings could be recorded, or a snapshot could be made. Each group of students could share their viewings with the rest of the class. We could get into compare/contrast our findings, etc. Also,our fourth and fifth grade students would not be the only students to benefit from these microscopes. Our sixth and seventh grade students could also use them.

How much more interesting and exciting is it to discover things on your own, than to read about them in a book or look at a picture? Imagine the look on a child's face while they are viewing stream water under the microscope or sharing their recording with the group.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
