The literacy of reading and writing has become a lost art form among middle school students. From IM, email, (instant messaging) to text messaging, and even the cell phone- students no longer read and write. As the writing teacher in a middle school asking students to produce different types of writing is like pulling teeth! I have come to the conclusion that when writing is shifted to fit a certain prescribed form we lose the writer’s voice. Voice in writing is defined as writing that has expression, it is engaging, you can sense the writer behind the words. As I improve my classroom library, I intend to flood my students with various genres of literature to encourage their own thoughts and ideas.

It is imperative that students are able to communicate effectively in order to compete in a global society; however, we must be able to help them find a passion for written communication and the best way to instruct that is exposing them and broadening their horizons through literature and experiences.

I am requesting two class sets of 30 novels that are focused on historical fiction. Help! Give the gift of reading. Donate one of the novel titles from the attached list to my classroom library. This is a gift that will keep giving year after year.
