Help Me Sharpen 5400 Pencils And Hole-Punch 2250 Papers!

My students need a heavy-duty electric pencil sharpener and a heavy-duty 3-hole punch.

Ms. Konarski PS 181 Brooklyn
Brooklyn, NY Grades PreK-2

Here's a few little math problems for you. I teach approximately 30 second graders. That means I have about 30 pencils a day to sharpen. There are 180 days of school in a school year. How many pencils do I sharpen in a year? I'll give you a minute to work it out . . . If your answer was "5400 pencils" (30 x 180), you are correct! Here's another math problem. In the past three years I have bought about 5 standard electric sharpeners a year. (Since your regular old electric sharpener isn't made to sharpen pencils nearly as often as I sharpen pencils, the blades and motor tend to burn out after about 2 months of use.) These sharpeners generally cost about $16. How much money have I spent on electric sharpeners in the past three years? Here's another minute to work out the problem . . . If your answer was "$240" (3 x 5 x $16), you are correct! Now, what about the 3-hole punch? Due to limited funding in my school district, I am not provided with full class sets of workbooks. (That's right! Only some of my students get workbooks each year.) To make up for this gross lack of educational resources, I make photocopies of workbooks, then 3-hole punch and bind them for the students who are lacking books. For many different reasons, this is a frustrating and time-consuming process, especially when dealing with a finicky, low-capacity hole punch. Let's say 15 of my 30 students need photocopied reading workbooks and each book is 150 pages long. How many pages will I need to hole-punch and bind? Here's one more minute for you . . . If your answer was "2250 pages" (15 x 150), you are correct again! Though this electric sharpener and 3-hole punch bear rather hefty price tags, they are guaranteed to provide me with years of maintenance-free service, well past my 5400 pencils due to be sharpened and 2250 pages of paper due to be punched this year. Your help will ensure that this class of students and many future groups of students will have sharpened pencils and well-organized workbook copies for the school year. When pencils can be sharpened without constant hassle, my students can spend more time improving their writing skills. When students can easily hole-punch and organize photocopied workbooks, more classroom time can be devoted to learning the material contained inside and ALL students can benefit from the use of these workbooks.
