Hi! I'm the brand new librarian at a huge California high school. I serve almost 2,000 totally awesome teenagers. Our location is rural/suburban, and our population is diverse and varied.

Since I arrived on campus, many students have have asked me to improve the seating in the library first and foremost. They acknowledge that what we have is functional, but they complain that it's uncomfortable. Because of our block schedule, periods are an hour and forty-five minutes. That's a long time for them to sit in a straight-back wooden chair, especially if they need to read. They say, "You should get comfier chairs for the library, Ms. K. Like bean bags!" They are absolutely right, and if I had a dollar for each student who has said something like that to me since school started this year, I could afford these bean bags without having to write a grant for them! =)

The body-molding shape of a bean bag is perfect for curling up in with one of the library's good books. =) But beyond being exactly what my students are asking me for, bean bags make sense for the library in many ways. Bean bags are comfortable, durable, cleanable, movable, and affordable. Plus, they're fun! I'm asking for five bags because no teen wants to read alone! =)

Evidence shows the relationship between school libraries and academic achievement. Put simply, students who use their school library do better in school. Big yellow bean bags would be a tempting lure for those teens who tend to be turned off by "that big scary room with all the books," and they'd be a meaningful reward for those students who already love the library. So when my students ask me again about getting comfier seating for the library, I'll tell them, thanks to DonorsChoose, it's in the bag! =)
