Make History Come Alive

My students need complete reading sets of The Lacemaker and the Princess (a great young adult novel about the French Revolution) and A Separate Peace (a moral allegory set during WWII).

A New School With Few Resources We're a charter school that serves children in grades K-8. Our students are exceptional: hard-working, creative, and playful. They all play at least one instrument, and have Spanish three times per week starting in kindergarten. Children come from as far as 20 miles away and we have long waiting lists for most classes. Because we are committed to having art, music, and foreign language in our curriculum, most of our funds go to pay teachers. We must scrounge every year to get enough supplies for our students, particularly books.

Because we are a charter school, we do not have some of the resources that regular public schools can count on, such as a library. Each year we try to add relevant books to our individual classroom libraries. I feel that historical fiction is one of the best ways to give students a sense of the period and make them interested in learning more about it. This year I found two books that I want to add to my library: The Lacemaker and the Princess, a novel about the French Revolution; and A Separate Peace, John Knowles' classic novel set during WWII.

By purchasing reading sets of these two books I know I will make my students life-long students of history. When each child has a copy, I will also be able to create curriculum around these texts, such as vocabulary lists, imaginative writing projects, and research projects that link the fictional stories with the actual history.

By helping me build our classroom library, not only will you be helping this group of eighth graders, but all our future eighth graders as well.
