Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are a small charter school that is committed to making the principles of nonviolent communication and humanistic, project based education available to our entire community, not just to those who can afford private school tuition.

Like many charter schools our funds are limited and we much ask for donations from our families or outside sources. Our charter school services 41 zip codes, which brings with it a wide range in economic diversity. While we value being able to service our diverse school population it also means that they can not always make monetary donations. At the end of the last school year our one convection oven, for the entire school, broke.

We have learned through experience that a fantastic way to get kids excited about basic principles of science and math is through cooking. Learning to cook is a great way for our kids to explore fractions, addition and subtraction, and the importance of reading and following directions, as well as to be introduced to concepts like physical versus chemical changes and exchange of energy. We have also incorporated cooking into our studies of other cultures; mixing up recipes and tasting unfamiliar foods give students a direct experience of other’s customs. We are fortunate to have a classroom aide who attended the Culinary Arts Institutes and who has generously shared his skills with our students through the years. The teachable moments have been many and the end products have been delicious.

We are requesting funds to replace our counter top convection oven and give this year’s students access to the many learning opportunities available through cooking. Thank you for your help. Our littlest kids especially need safe, engaging ways to build the foundation for a lifetime of intellectual curiosity and discovery.
