My students need a class set (27) of tablets for one-to-one device usage. This will allow us to go "paperless" for the majority of our classwork assignments, assessments, and text-reading options.
I plan is to embark on a "paperless classroom" with my 9th grade students. Our county recently adopted a BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) policy. As a teacher, this is such a valuable tool. Unfortunately, the county has not found a way to provide devices for students who cannot afford one of their own; thus making having a true one-to-one device classroom impossible. In order for teachers, like myself, who desperately want to embrace the technological advances in education, all of my students need access to a device to use. Even though our population of economically-disadvantaged students is not immense, it is very much present within the classroom. Policies like BYOT only further ostracize these students, who are desperately trying to blend into the status-quo. With the expansion and redistricting in our community, our population of these students is rapidly growing.
WIthin my 9th grade English classes, I have an extremely wide-range of students including: those with IEPs (Individualized Educational Plans), those who are learning English as a second language, those who aspire to attend an Ivy League school upon graduation, and those who don't have a place to call home.
My Project
Technology is an educational tool that we need to embrace in order to move forward with the next generation of students.
Having a classroom set of tablets will open countless doors of learning opportunities for my students.
Seriously, I could go on and on with possible enhancements to the classroom experience, but here are a few highlights that I plan immediately incorporate:
- NO MORE PAPER!
We will be able to virtually eliminate the excess of paper waste we currently have for formative assessments, essay drafts, annotating texts, etc.
- UNLIMITED BOOK CHOICES!
Students will have unlimited access to our community library & their ebook choices, allowing more choice in their independent reading selections.
- GOOGLE CLASSROOM!
All in-class assessments will be online (using Google Classroom), which will allow deeper analyzation of student data and faster, more effective feedback to students' needs.
