Among The Left Behind!!!!

My classroom needs 30 copies of "Among the Hidden" and 16 copies of "Boy in the Striped Pajamas" to engage my literature students.

I teach 8th grade, at-risk, low income, inner city students. Most of these students read at or below grade level, and I have a difficult time engaging them in literature class. In order for them to become "hooked" on a novel they have to be interested in the topic. That is very difficult to find for my students. When I tell the students we are going to read, all I hear are moans and groans. If I can find a novel that "hooks" the students they will learn to enjoy to read.

Our school district does not have extra money for supplies, so it is almost impossible to purchase novels for literature class. My students read below grade level, so therefore they refuse to read. These two novels have the students intrigued. Right now I only have 1 copy of each of these novels. It would be great to have a class set of the novels.

I need classroom sets of "Among the Hidden" and "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas". If each student had a book of his/her own we would be able to many wonderful things in the classroom. I could divide the students up into groups and they could read and discuss the book as they go along. The students who are having difficulty reading could work with students who are more fluent. My students would be able to discuss characters, plot, setting, inferences, main idea, foreshadowing, and summary if each student was able to have his or her own book. It is my hope that when the students finish these novels they will be encouraged to choose another novel from the same author or the same topic, and read another book. I hope to instill a love of reading to each and everyone of my students.

Your help will ensure that my students are engaged in literature and learning how to read. If the students have a novel that they are interested in it is much easier to teach them how to read. You would make it possible for my students to gain a love of reading. If they are able to finish a novel they will have such a great sense of pride.
