Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Prose - power or prison? The power of the language and the ability to read is a potent form of communication- for those of us who have the opportunity and ability. For those who don't, it can be a prison: The lack of words hinders one's proficiency in any task.

My students generally do not have computer access, which therefore means they do not have availability to work with the wealth of information that can be found on the internet, or ultimately, the availability of the different forms of prose. Learning English is a difficult task as best; as the second hardest language in the world to master, English written prose is even worse. The lack of exposure to different forms of literature hinders our students acceptance into the professional world. How can they possibly allude to Greek mythology, or biblical statements; better yet how can we expect them to pass state tests that expect them to understand figurative language they have never seen used in contemporary writing.

The Weekly Reader offers insight with highly attractive pages. It provides several genres of information all within a specific topic. What an amazing experience! I share the sample copy I ordered with my students and they were immediately enthralled with the colorful artwork; the simple, yet educational, quips on the margins and the artwork, which cleverly depicts elements of the story. "Why can't we all have one of these to read instead of the plain-jane listing in their school provided anthology?" A question I'm unable to answer; a resource I'm unable to provide.

As a teacher I'm constantly buying supplies for students (pencils, pens, dividers to learn how to be organized, agendas, 3x5 cards...the list is endless). A simple, weekly magazine with art and prose would encourage students to explore and adopt new vocabulary through the reconnaissance of a variety of well put together genres.
