If they only had a brush! I work with some very creative high school students. We live in a rural community with very few local resources. The poverty level is high. About 150 students pass through my room on a daily basis.

My art budget has been slashed. My state has been faced with shortfalls in the budget and education has taken a big hit. On top of that, even when I have had the supplies I needed, tools often disappear or are misused and damaged beyond repair. With these two issues in mind, I have devised a plan to foster greater responsibility as well as creativity on the part of the student.

To reward responsible behavior and encourage creativity, I want to reward students with individual art supply kits. They will take personal ownership of the supplies they use. These kits will be awarded to students who accomplish the following tasks: 1. Complete and turn in assignments on time. 2. No unexcused absences or tardies per grading period. 3. Have textbooks in class on the assigned days. 4. Have a #2 pencil and eraser in class at all times. 5. Follow classroom rules and procedures. 6. Volunteer 2 or more hours to assist others around the school, such as working in the media center, cafeteria, other classrooms, in the community, or help with grounds maintenance. After showing such commitment, the student will have earned his/her own art tool kit containing the necessary items to awaken their creative potential.

We need the basics. I am asking for your help to provide paint brushes for these kits. When a child has to work for something, there is more at stake than just being able to paint. In the process of providing the chance to develop a child's creative abilities, you will be sending a powerful message of commitment and responsibility that will last a lifetime!
