Finding one letter in a sentence is like trying to find a needle in a haystack for 4 and 5 year old children. I am the reading and literacy teacher at an early childhood center. We have a total of 520 students in our building. We are a title 1 school with a poverty rate of approximately 80%.

Our young students come to us with their vision still developing naturally. But many of them come to us without any exposure to written letters, words, or sentences. As they mature in their vision, we are teaching them what letters, words and sentences look like. It is difficult for these young readers to focus on the many objects and letters on a page. We use our fingers to point and home-made pointers made out of Popsicle sticks.

These materials that I am requesting will provide my students a way to highlight and focus on letters and words. The word wands will highlight a letter or word without obstructing it. The reading trackers will help my students to stay on track while reading. The highlighter tape will enhance my teaching of letters, syllables, and words.

Your gift will enable my students to learn to identify letters and words faster and with more clarity. The bright colors will motivate and interest the reluctant reader. Once I can gain their interest, the learning will begin. My students will feel successful and encouraged when they can focus their attention.
