Archaeologist, geographer, historian - a typical sixth grade resume, right? These are the roles that my students assume during history class as we uncover ancient civilizations together all year long, though we need your help! I am in my second year teaching sixth grade history in Southern California. The student population that our middle school serves is predominantly low-income, Latino (82%) or African American (17%), and performing below grade level. Last year less than 15% of our students performed on or above grade level on the California Standards Test.

I am always looking for great activities to bring into the classroom that will help students develop their skills as archaeologists, geographers and historians, because these are important life skills. However, we could use some resources in our classroom to give us additional learning experiences! In order to practice being archaeologists and historians, we would like to read "Jess" as a class. "Jess" is a book about a pre-teen who goes with her archaeologist parents to Belize for a dig - and learns all about being an archaeologist and historian along the way! This will be a great experience for students to connect in-class learning with historical fiction as they encounter ancient Mayan culture through the perspective of someone their own age.

Additionally, we need some tools to help us practice being geographers. We would like to get a large write and wipe inflatable globe as well as some write and wipe world maps, so that students can practice identifying and labeling features. This learning tool will be a great reference for independent work and group work. We would also like to get kits that we can use to create models of maps. Students will use the molds in the kits to create their maps with clay, then they will identify and paint important features. This will enable students to see the locations of landforms and gain a better understanding of topography - important parts of being a geographer! These will also be tools that we can reference all year long as we study the geography of areas where ancient civilizations emerged.

We are so excited to dig into these materials and we hope that you will consider helping us bring these experiences to life in our classroom. With these resources we can develop critical skills that will enrich our understanding of ancient civilizations. Thank you so much for your time and interest in empowering young geographers, historians, and archaeologists!
