Wall of Fame

My schools fifth grade students need 300 tiles, a tile setter, and 10 glazes to leave their legacy of art on a "Wall of Fame" when they graduate from our school.

I teach grades 3-5 Art. Our school is classified as a Title I school and I teach everyone at my school including students classified as moderate to severe mentally challenged, students with autism, students in wheelchairs, students with hearing problems. I also teach the gifted in my school and everyone who fits in between. Although, everyone at my school is "special" to me.

This project is the fifth grader's chance to leave their art legacy at our school before going to middle school. They create art work on a ceramic tile, that is then installed through volunteers at my school onto our school walls, entitled "The Wall of Fame". They make something that represents their stay here at our school. Nothing makes them feel better than walking by and touching their own art on the walls. They even will bring their little brothers and sisters up to school and show them their art. It makes their siblings feel good, that even if big brother has graduated to middle school, a little piece of them is still here that they can touch.

I need 300 tiles for every fifth grader to be able to leave behind a piece of themselves behind on our school; literally, it is their mark on our school. I need glazes for them to paint the tiles and then I will fire them to set the paint. Glazes work much better than paint or markers, because glazes truly are permanent and will not come off when scraped or cleaned. Then I need 1 tile setter to make it easier for me to fire the pieces. I have 1 setter already. This project is a culminating activity that the fifth grade looks forward to doing. I have done this for the past 10 years, but with a budget crunch this year, it looks like I will be breaking with tradition this year.

Already, during the first week of school, students are asking if they, as fifth graders, will be able to "do a tile" for our "Wall of Fame". I draw a big question mark in the air with my finger and tell them that they may not be able to if I can't locate the money to do this. If you could see the confusion and disappointment on their faces, I know you will find it in your heart to donate a little. You will be able to make their dreams of leaving their mark, a culmination of all their school experiences on our school before transitioning to the middle school setting. Thank you.
