Over 300 Video Clips and 92 Premade Powerpoints Go Unused

My students need an LCD projector for classroom use.

Ms. K. Jim Hill High School
Jackson, MS Grades 9-12

Variety is the spice of life. I teach Algebra I to ninth graders in critical needs school district in Mississippi. My students are several years behind grade level when they get to me, but they must pass a standardized test in Algebra I to graduate from high school. This means they have a lot of catching up to do in a relatively short amount of time. These time constraints mean I am not able to use as many hand on activities and investigatory projects as I would like and instead rely more heavily on lecture and direct instruction. To a 14 or 15 year old this can get boring quickly, especially when classes are 95 minutes long. My students would benefit tremendously from an LCD projector in the classroom. Many of my students are visual learners. Our new textbook publisher has come out with an online companion site and CD-ROM that include over 300 video clips. These clips are of Professor Edward Burger explaining and modeling example problems from the text. He does so in a straight forward yet enthusiastic and entertaining manner that when interspersed throughout a lesson can really help to keep students engaged. Furthermore, the site includes a full PowerPoint presentation for every single section of the book (about 92 presentations per book), and access to virtual manipulatives. Currently, it is very difficult to use this material in class. Our school has over 80 teachers, but only two projectors available for use. If our classroom were to have its own LCD projector, we would be able to add another comical, yet insightful voice to our room. We would also be able to take advantage of the myriad of tutorials and math games now available for free online. There is some much material out there that is currently out of our reach. Please consider making a contribution that will enhance the learning environment of each and every one of my students. Projected use of projector: *Video clips (provided by textbook publisher) *PowerPoint presentations (provided by textbook publisher) *Quickly projecting directions to assignments (saves time and paper) *Online manipulatives *Online math games *Online math tutorials *Online brainteasers and challenge problems *After school Quiz Bowl tournaments *Parents' back to school night *Revealing the need for math in the real world (through different math and technology websites) *Project skills check at the beginning or end of a lesson *The list goes on!
