Some "child" will get left behind--the gifted child. My students are all classified as gifted learners. I teach grades 4-6, as well as second grade enrichment. I am "split" between three different schools. One particular school suffers from the lack of technology. This school is a high poverty school housed in a community in which technology is not an ordinary part of life.

Help! Only one side of our brains is working! Part of teaching gifted learners involves facilitating activities that utilize the left and right side of the brain. It is my duty to exercise both sides of my students' brains, and to "meet" them where they are. Computers and technology utilize all aspects of learning and giftedness. This year, we are studying Egypt, and virtual field trips and research are a must. My students, however, have no working computers in the gifted classroom to use for these concept-based purposes.

Students in this particular community tend to keep their thoughts on a local level. In an effort to broaden the students' global idea base and provide extensive background knowledge and experiences, we will need a working computer for our classroom. With gas prices on the rise and No Child Left Behind legislation limiting field trips and projects, the students are becoming more and more intellectually isolated with the confines of the school walls. In order to produce a crop of gifted, proactive citizens, I will need the aid of technology.

Your help will make it possible for my students to "see the world" and acquire life skills. Gifted children need in-depth learning that includes rigor and academic "meat". Without your support, the gifted children of my school will not have an outside connection to the world.
