Creative, artistic, and crafty, using one's imagination to create one of a kind works of literary art. My school is located in a low income/immigrant suburb in Southern California. By the time students reach my third grade class, they are able to put their thoughts into words. The students are eager to share their family traditions and cultures.

Preserving one's heritage, customs, and traditions is an important learning process for many of my students. In third grade, they learn about the importance of storytelling and how it is passed down to each generation. My students are mostly children of first generation immigrants who are very keen about their culture and customs. At this point in their lives, they are faced with losing their cultural heritage/family stories because those memories are not recorded.

In order to preserve their cultural past, customs, rituals, stories, and pictures, the students will need to compile these into a type of media that they will be able to keep as a heirloom. Something that they can share with their own children/family members. What an amazing way to preserve all this history through bookbinding. By learning how to make their own books with the use of book kits, glue, thread, punches, awls, needles, linen cloth, they will learn about the book making process. This process will enable each child to cherish their cultural identity.

Your support will ensure that my third grade students will be inspired to become authors and story collectors. Their traditions and customs will live on through their books.
