I teach 6th and 7th grade exploratories and 8th grade Art I. I teach in Southwest Virginia and art is a subject that students like, but are not exposed to enough in their every day lives. Many have not been to a museum and do not realize that having a career in art is an option for them. I want to encourage students to like art and have them learn how to draw the things they want to draw.

The biggest obstacle I face is not having enough drawing books for my students. It is especially hard when we draw animals because I only have two animal drawing books that I purchased on my own. There are usually 20 or more students in a class and two books are not enough to share.

This project will serve to benefit my students in helping them become better artists by giving them an art reference. It also will help teach them step by step how to draw something they want to draw. Using these books, I can have more time to spend with each student instead of trying to teach one student how to start from scratch. The student can simply find the animal he or she wants to draw and begin using the steps listed in the book. It will also reduce the frustration of a student waiting on me to help them. They can feel confident and begin their own work knowing how they are going to draw their animal.

If this project is funded it will make it possible for my students to become better artists. They will have a reference and step by step instructions and will be more likely to add more details to their drawings. The frustration level will be less and it will instill confidence in their drawing ability. Also, these books will last so students for years to come will be able to use them and create their own successful drawings.
