Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are ninth graders who are new to the United States. They come from different countries and speak different languages, but they are all enthusiastic about learning English and adapting to their new lives here in Massachusetts.

Typical bilingual dictionaries provide verbal definitions which leave young students confused, but the few picture dictionaries that we have do a great job of explaining, in a meaningful way, new vocabulary to our students. Although the students ask me if they can take the picture dictionaries home, there are just too few available to allow them to go outside the classroom. It is very frustrating for the students who really want to learn. They know that mastery of English is the key to their academic success and future opportunities here in the United States.

The Oxford Picture Dictionaries provide colorful depictions of objects and activities that are relevant to the everyday lives of our students as well as their studies. I have found that students learn, understand, and remember more if they have access to these dictionaries. Moreover, the students actually enjoy looking through these dictionaries. The picture dictionaries are not only easy to comprehend, but are fun to use and lead to conversations and questions about the topics introduced. The material is presented thematically, so there are strong connections between the introduced vocabulary and the students' own experiences, which allow for better understanding and retention.

Your help will make a crucial difference in the lives of these young people who have recently immigrated to the United States. They are eager to learn, contribute, and become productive members of our society. Your sponsorship of this project will make it possible for each student to have their own copy of a picture dictionary to take home, to enable them to complete their homework and outside projects, and to support them in their quest to find meaning in all the experiences they will encounter here in the United States.
