Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We need you to hear us and we will listen in our kindergarten classroom! I teach kindergarten in the most fantastic kindergarten classroom! I teach students from low-income, culturally diverse families. We are a neighborhood school where families give their time and love.

I teach is a low-income area. My students come from hard working families who have moved to the United States to fulfill the American Dream! In our district we have adopted a new literacy curriculum, which includes a wonderful listening center component. However, in our hall way we have one cassette listening center, to share. It's a gamble if all headphones are going to work on the week your classroom is assigned to have it (once or twice a year). As kindergarteners, my students cannot wait to learn to read. There is one of me and twenty-three of them...hmmm. What better way to facilitate a joy of reading, than to have them independently read a book at a listening center? They think it's the cat's meow that they have finished an entire book by themselves! Wow! The look on their faces! An independent listening center would allow me to work with more students to meet their individual needs!

My classroom needs a listening center that does not take up a lot of space and is child friendly. I have researched a couple of options and the MP3 listening center can be used over and over again, simply by updating books on CD to the MP3 format. Children know what an MP3 player is and know how to operate it, sometimes even better than myself! This project not only would benefit my students this year, but in years to come as well! As mentioned above, our new reading program has books on CD that go along with the theme and meet State Education Standards. A listening center will empower students to take control of their education by teaching them to become independent!

By donating to my project, you will allow students to access books in a way that they have not been able to. Your contribution will teach them to read, develop a love of books, as well as use technology to access literature. Money is tight in our district and classroom budgets go towards buying school supplies for those who cannot afford it; without your help, my classroom and students may not get the things other classrooms take for granted. Thank you!
