"Please help me to teach Science! I have recently taken a job at a new charter school downtown in a major city. I am teaching the Junior Class Earth Space Science and Biology this year. Our students come to us because they typically have not done well in traditional school settings. My classroom is diverse with white, black, and Hispanic students. Several of them have learning disabilities. Our students typically come from low economic backgrounds, but they are determined to not only graduate, but go to college so that they may do something better with their lives.

The majority of my students have never had a science class since middle school, and that was without laboratories and activities. Most have told me that they hate science because in the past, their teachers have only lectured to them. Without textbooks or supplies, I am determined to help them see that science is not only fun, but essential to understanding what is going on in our world. My students often believe that if they aren't going to work in a laboratory, then they don't need science. I am trying to teach them that they need to hae a foundational understanding of basic science concepts so that when they make adult decisions such as voting, they can look at issues such as stem cell development and drilling for oil with an open but critical mind and make an educated choice.

So far, I have no supplies to teach my students. I am very interested in using the BioQuest River to the Sea to help my students get a better visual understanding of the aspect in groundwater of the water cycle. I am hoping that from some simple experiments, they can see how easily groundwater can become polluted and how it affects our environment.

You can help my students learn that not only is science interesting, but it is essential that they become critical thinkers so that they may become productive members of society. Please help us begin to build up resources for our classroom with our first project to understanding the water cycle and its importance in our lives.

My students need resources to help them learn the state standards for Earth Space Science, and to understand the water cycle and how pollution affects the water we drink.
