Can you imagine how things might be different today if Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter From a Birmingham Jail" essay had been riddled with grammatical errors and anchored by clunky prose? The students in my 10th grade Humanities classes are diving into the past, wrestling with the present, and developing voices to shape the future. We are an urban, high-poverty school, and English is not the first language of more than a third of our students. My classes are inclusion classes, in which about one out of four students have been diagnosed with a learning disability.

Passion, curiosity, and critical thinking fuel my students' writing and speaking, but we need help to present our ideas professionally so that audiences give our voices the respect and attention they deserve. Unfortunately, our school has no writing reference texts that students can use to revise, edit, and polish their written work.

To craft professional-quality writing, my students need the same tool found on the desk of every professional writer: a grammar and style guide. A class set of a student-friendly writer's handbook can empower my students to take their communication skills to the next level. Such a resource, supported with classroom instruction, puts in students' hands the answers to their questions about everything from subject-verb agreement to accurate citation of research sources.

Many of my students enter 10th grade writing well below grade level, and as mentioned, large numbers of them are English Language Learners. Yet each of them deserve a chance to advance to and thrive in college -- and indeed, that is their goal. Having a writer's handbook and knowing how to use it represents nothing short of access for my students: access to the English language, access to future educational and life opportunities, and access to the means of ensuring that their voices are heard.
