Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My high school provides a rigorous four-year sequential art curriculum that helps young artists begin their formal education in art and design. Our goal is to help youth to learn how to use creativity and the visual arts to create a better life for themselves and their communities. Students are admitted by lottery process. Some come with advance art skills while many enter with no previous training. Our students are primarily of African American and Latino descent. The majority come from single parent homes where their only parent is typically a woman and whose highest level of education is a high school diploma. Many of these parents struggle to provide just the necessities of daily life. Needles to say their income cannot support to pay for extras, such as college tuition, college admission fees, trips to visit schools or preparation of special materials such as a college admission art portfolio. These circumstances create many challenges for our students who wish to go onto to college and especially for those who would like to pursue a professional creative degree in art or design. Our seniors who wish to apply to professional art and design colleges need special assistance to complete the admission requirements. They can take my Senior Portfolio Class, which is a rigorous workshop where students prepare new artwork for an admission portfolio, college applications, and essays. We meet everyday for 90 minutes. I have taught the class for 2 years, and in every year so far, about 40-50% of the students receive full or partial scholarships to prestigious art schools. This success is due to the hard work and discipline the students embrace knowing that it is the hallmark of a professional artist and necessary to achieve one's goals. The most challenging part of the class is the preparation of the admission portfolio. Most art or design schools require that each student submit a portfolio of 16-20 artworks The admission portfolio must include art that reflects each student’s passions, talents, demonstrates an original point of view and serious commitment to pursuing a creative career. This portfolio is presented at face-to-face interviews at National Portfolio Day (an annual national art and design college fair) or to college admission interviews and open houses, where professional artists and professors review portfolios. This admission portfolio presentation is a significant benchmark in a young aspiring artist’s life. It is the first culminating event where they must represent themselves as a professional artist to another professional artist. Each student must present him or herself – by speaking about themselves and their artwork. Having the best means to exhibit their artwork is very important. A sturdy and handsome display case helps to support the student’s high-level aspirations to become a creative professional. My talented and aspiring young artists need your help to succeed at this first benchmark. Please help these very deserving youth to each obtain a beautiful and strong professional portfolio (23 x 31 x 3 inch) that they can use to display their artwork with great pride. It is an important gift that will inspire them to work harder and to get closer to their dream.
