Our Books Want a New Home

My students need a variety of 11 different phonics, vocabulary, and problem solving charts, kits, and centers to improve their English vocabulary, decoding skills, and problem solving skills.

I teach 3rd grade inclusion bilingual in an inner city elementary school. My students come from Mexico, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. The children work so hard and they are eager to learn to speak English, as are their parents. Our school is one of the oldest in the district and we do not have the resources to purchase materials for every classroom.

This year, we are very lucky in that most of the children are transitioning very well into English. Since this is a bilingual classroom, many do not have the support of listening to someone speak English at home. For this reason, many do not have the vocabulary skills and reading skills necessary to perform at the same level of their peers.

The materials I have ordered include phonics and sight vocabulary games that the children can play. In addition, I have ordered some manipulatives that they can use in centers to develop their decoding skills. I have also ordered some comprehension kits and a problem solving chart to use daily. I believe these materials will allow the children to learn while at the same time engaging in meaningful activities and not the traditional paper and pencil way of learning.
