I teach second grade to a highly transient population in California. Most of these students are English Language Learners, children of military parents, or homeless.

My students need organization and structure during morning meetings and lessons on the rug. Due to the high degree of instability and transience in their lives, my students rely on school for structure. These second graders would especially benefit from a rug that has squares. Providing some choice within the confines of structure is the best thing I can do for these high-needs children.

One "calming colors" rug accomplishes many goals! Firstly, the 20 squares enable predesignated seating and preempt any squabbling over where to sit. Secondly, while many rugs overstimulate due to their primary colors, the calming colors rug contributes to a peaceful environment conducive to learning. Finally, numerous students will benefit from this rug as it will stay in my classroom for years to come.

Your contribution to my classroom will help build community and focus for those activities, stories, and meetings held on the floor in our classroom library. By having a rug that outlines where to sit, my students will be able to immediately sit in their own square and tend to the task at hand!
