Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I don't call my middle schoolers 'students'- in my classroom, they are scholars. My scholars are between learning to read and reading to learn- and are thus in the most critical grades of their school career. I teach Language Arts to 6th and 8th graders in an inner city in Maryland. My scholars come from low socioeconomic status backgrounds and virtually all will (yes, will!) be the first generation in their family to attend college. The majority of them are on free or reduced lunch, yet they still manage to come to school with a positive attitude toward learning.

Unfortunately, my school is unable to provide teachers with even basic supplies such as copy paper, so instead of making my scholars go without notes and graphic organizers, I have purchased all of my own supplies or networked with family members to receive donations of supplies like paper, markers, folders, pencils, library books, and so on. Though these donations have been generous and much appreciated by my scholars and myself, yet I still continue to think of improvements I could make "If only I had...". The situation is made even more desperate due to the fact that in my 6th grade class I have 40 students. This is because budget cuts only allowed for a certain amount of teachers to be hired, and since 40 is the class-size limit, the 6th grade class was combined into one section. Of these 40, 7 have IEP's, and I am the only teacher in the classroom with them for 90 minutes most days (sometimes an inclusion teacher is available to provide services; often she is required elsewhere).

Though my classroom is decently sized (40 desks fit snugly), the scholars in the back of the room have a hard time viewing what I write on the board. I have tried writing larger on chart paper, but that is yet another non-renewable supply that I don't always have. If my classroom had an LCD Projector, I would be able to display any number of things in a way that all 40 of my scholars could see it. Plus, I could tie in multimedia innovations such as clips from plays to help us truly understand what it is to characterize, or find the main idea, or learn any number of objectives. Currently, I circle the room with my laptop, which is ineffective due to the time that it takes me to circle around to each scholar. In my high-need school, we need all the time we can get to make sure that my scholars succeed in achieving their goals. I need to know that their learning is not sacrificed due to the fact that they cannot read what is on the board since they sit in the back of a classroom. I need to know that their learning is not sacrificed because I cannot fully illustrate a learning objective due to my school's lack of technological resources.

Your generous donation will ensure that my scholars learn in a classroom that is equipped for their maximum success. You will make it possible for my scholars to make connections to their lives while learning Language Arts- a key component of making education effective. This project is of the utmost importance, and my scholars cannot afford to waste any more time squinting to see the chalkboard, or risk becoming disengaged due to a lack of multimedia resources. Your help will affirm my scholars' purpose and bolster their ability to achieve at the highest levels, which they are beginning to see they can do. They cannot afford to lose sight of their goals now. Your help will keep their goals in the clearest focus.
