Waking Up In Science Class

My students need 1 Bill Nye: Earth Science DVD and 1 Bill Nye: Astronomy DVD.

I teach 6th grade at a middle school where we have inclusion, grade-level, and advanced classes. More than 50% of our school gets free or reduced lunch.

Science class is so important to the future of our country. Middle school science is a time to capture students' interest and get them moving toward careers in science. I can remember seeing Bill Nye when I was younger and loving how "cool" he made science look. My students today love Bill Nye as much as I did when I was younger. Once or twice and year I have to be absent and these videos provide an excellent tool for me to use while I am away. They will continue the learning with an interesting activity that substitutes can teach.

In the first video, we see how Earth is always changing, and Earth's species must continually adapt. Host Bill Nye gives an inside look at planet Earth, from its inner core to its protective magnetic field. Discover how earthquakes and volcanoes help explain plate tectonics and the dynamic geology of oceans and continents. Learn how Earth's atmosphere gives scientific insight about weather and climate. Look at forms of radiation and the potential dangers from harmful gases and geologic changes. In the second video, Nye covers Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity, demonstrates how Hubble determined that the universe is expanding, and discusses the twentieth-century advancements that help us understand gamma ray bursts, black holes, pulsars, and quasars. Other highlights include Edmond Halley, whose discovery of comets orbiting the Sun proved that gravity works in space, and Alexander and Caroline Herschel, whose map of the sky brought about new understanding of our universe.

Your help will make it possible for me to provide my students with a great learning tool. Your generosity means so much to our school and community. Thank you.
