I teach high school social studies in an urban school district. We have recently been authorized to teach International Baccalaureate courses. I have been teaching the junior and senior level of History of the Americas course for three years. There are many locations that I would love to take the students on field trips to help them expand their horizons.

Unfortunately, I am unable to provide the students with the enrichment of field trips that they need to be competitive. My school has a large majority on free or reduced lunch. These students' families have limited resources such as, computers, digital cameras, and other electronics. Additionally, the school district has very limited resources for taking the students on the field trips. My city and other nearby cities have vast amounts of available learning excursions that would help the students expand their horizons. Providing them with a variety of teacher driven virtual trips, as well as many student produced field trips would be exceptional.

I was trained this summer in virtual field trips. This would allow students to work in groups and record pictures of interesting locations. They would then create the virtual field trip in PowerPoint and record them onto CD. This would then be available to all of the students so that they don't actually have to leave the building and still expand their horizons. The items that I have requested would allow the students to be able to do this. I have requested one digital camera to do the picture taking, the accessories like memory card and docking station to save the pictures on, and finally blank CDs to record their virtual field trips on.

Your help will ensure that my students will be able to experience exciting field trips in a cost effective manner. Additionally, these field trips could be made available to all students in the entire district.
