Well, we want to give our first graders that opportunity! We want to take our 80 central Texans on a "trip" around the world and give them the chance to learn about holidays and traditions from countries near and far! During the month of December, each of the first grade classes will have an opportunity to research various winter holidays. They will investigate what children their age do to celebrate these holidays, the foods they eat, the games they play, and the music they listen to. Then, they will be able to compare and contrast traditions they have with these new traditions we are learning about. Then, they will create passports and travel journals to record what they learn as they "travel" to other countries to learn about these holidays and traditions. We are asking for resource books and books that the children can read about different holidays around the world, a music CD with children's music from around the world, and arts and crafts materials to create their own passports and travel journals. Our request will help the children gain a greater appreciation of celebrating our differences and making connections as to how we are all similar. Our project will also help reach some of our social studies Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills that we are required to teach in first grade. The books and other supplies will be able to be used year after year, thus benefiting future students. You will make it possible for our students to learn about various cultures and traditions, while encouraging reading, writing, comprehension, and visual arts skills.
Thank you so much for your time and interest. We really appreciate your help and support. Best wishes to you as you celebrate your winter holidays! Thanks again for helping us teach with hands-on projects and innovative ideas. We couldn't do it without your help! hide» Our first grade students need information books and photo books on world holidays, a music CD with children's music from around the world, and materials to create their own travel journals, including blank notebooks, stamp pads and giant stampers. details»
