CLAY AS COMMUNITY SERVICE: This activity involves 90 students enrolled in regular Ceramics I and II classes and 10 additional students who participate in the after-school pottery club at our high school. Students at our school earn creativity and community service hours by learning how to use clay tools and equipment to form and finish ceramic products that are used to create funds for charitable organizations or are used directly by other service organizations. Clay artists from the Clay Connection of Northern Virginia work with us to make bowls, lead student information workshops on hunger and help with community service projects, such as, the Empty Bowls Soup Supper. Last year’s profits from the supper benefited So Others Might Eat (SOME), a charity that provides meals and services for homeless and hungry people in the Washington DC area.

This is the fourth year we have formal Ceramics classes at our school. We have also restarted the National Art Honor Society to recognize students taking leadership positions in the Everybody Bowls pottery projects and other arts related community service activities. Art teachers in our county are allocated $12 per student per year for all basic supplies. Extra funds are raised through student fees and quarterly fundraising events, but there is never enough to cover costs for the projects that are beyond the scope of the basic ceramics classroom curriculum.

I would like to use the DonorsChoose.org donations to replace the broken and scarred kiln shelves we use for cone 6 electric firings of stoneware. Our current shelves have reached the end of their lives and shed flakes onto otherwise good quality, attractive glazed ceramic products. More shelves means a safer and faster rate of kiln firings for our ceramics classes and art honor society community service projects that depend on professional quality FOOD SAFE glaze finishes.

Your help will reinforce the message to my students that the Arts does have a place in the community and that clay can be the medium through which we promote service and leadership opportunities for our young people.
