This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students come from a neighborhood of little opportunity. Most are on free or reduced lunch. They have very few experiences outside the classroom. This year, I have a enthusiastic group of students (I had them last year, too) with supportive parents.

We are studying the American Revolution this year, and I would like to read the novel Johnny Tremaine with the students to teach them about the Revolution as an exciting story, rather than as a series of events and dates to memorize.

I've ordered 36 copies of the novel Johnny Tremaine and a teacher's guide. Last year, I taught them about the Gold Rush using the novel The Great Horn Spoon, and they loved it. I've found students learn about history much more willingly (enthusiastically, even) when it is presented in a story format.

You will make it possible for my students and the students after them to improve their reading and comprehension skills and learn about their country's important history. You will give them a rich resource from which to draw conclusions, write essays, and complete many educational and entertaining projects.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
