Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I am a second grade teacher at a small public school in urban Illinois. My students are mostly English Language Learners and come from diverse backgrounds. Many of my students and their families are also still adjusting to the expectations and norms of being a student in an American school system. At the beginning of each school year our school asks each student to bring in basic school supplies that should last all year. The students are responsible for their own paper, notebooks, binders, folders, pencils, markers, crayons, colored pencils, scissors and glue for the entire school year! As a teacher, I am even responsible for supplying my own paper for the copy machine. Not all of my students can afford to bring their own school supplies and with 30 students in my classroom this becomes a very difficult situation - especially midway through the year! It also means there is no money to purchase basic school supplies, and leaves no budget for art supplies, field trips or other creative extras for our class. Last year my students and I came up with a very creative solution to this budget problem: we made and sold our own photo notecards! We sold the notecards at local art & craft shows, to friends & family and through PTG events. Last year my students raised enough money to purchase a book for our classroom library, some new art supplies, a pet fish and help pay for some of a field trip to the planetarium! The best, however, was seeing the pride on their faces when they finished a photo notecard, their communication skills when negotiating card prices and the pure excitement on their faces when I brought the book and pet fish into the classroom that they had worked so hard for! This year I am writing a proposal to ask for your help in covering the cost of the materials needed to make the notecards! First, I have another resource that is generous enough to donate disposable cameras to my class! The students will use these to take photos of Chicago and their neighborhoods. Several students share a camera to cut down on film developing costs. Next, I have asked for cards, some envelopes and scissors for cutting the photos. Of course, I had to ask for glue sticks to glue the photos to the cards and glue the envelopes together! I also asked for labels so that the students can create and print a classroom label for the back of the cards. Last year, I was able to scrounge up enough old Chicago and Illinois maps and the students cut and folded their own handmade envelopes to sell with the notecards. These map-envelopes and Chicago photo notecards made some very fun stationery that gave my students a classroom budget, improved their math skills, developed their persuasive writing skills through the writing of advertisements and allowed them to enjoy art across the curriculum! I would love to give my class of second graders this year a similar opportunity to do some fundraising for themselves! Thanks for taking the time to read my proposal! I appreciate your consideration.
