In our classroom we are creating a generation of immigrants that will be successful bilingual citizens. I teach a second grade bilingual class where my goal is to teach my students the state curriculum in Spanish, but help transition them into the English language through supplemental activities. Our school is one of two bilingual schools in our district that takes care of our entire dual-language population. We live in a high-poverty area where more that 40% of our students receive free or reduced-lunch.

One of the best ways to accumulate another language is through experience. I like to read stories to my children in not only their native Spanish language, but English as well. My students also love to listen to books on CD and I find that this is a good opportunity to offer more exposure to the English language.

Unfortunately I am a second year teacher and I came into my current classroom with only 5 books on CD. The students love listening to the same stories over and over, but I would like to offer them more choices. I picked books of series characters in hopes that once they read one book with say, Biscuit, in it, they will want to go to our classroom library and find more books about him.

My students rely on school and TV to gain more experience with the English language. Your donation can ensure that my students develop good English habits instead of the poor ones they might find on TV. It is mainly through literacy my students gain positive English skills: you will make it possible for my students to experience the English language in a positive light. I truly believe that people make a difference and even though we don't know each other, you can help these second graders just by donating. Thank you.
