Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 8th grade science in an inner-city public school. 98% of our students are on free or reduced lunch and 88% are learning English as a second language. My classes consist of general education students as well as special education students in both math and science.

Because we are a low-income school, even just the basics are often scarce. We have started a program, International Baccalaureate, that is beginning to give students an opportunity to think more critically and be engaged in a more rigorous curriculum. In order for us to provide this opportunity to our students, we must have the equipment and supplies. They deserve it just as much as anyone else.

The video cameras I am requesting will enable the students to complete two projects in Genetics. The first project will involve them making a music video about mitosis. We watched some videos on YouTube and they got so excited and started coming up with ideas of their own. It was so inspiring! The second project will give them the chance to do something a little more serious. Each student group will research a genetic disease or disorder and film an informational video about it. They will be used in the health classes as part of the lesson plan.

This new program that we have taken on is going to show our kids that they deserve a powerful education, just as much as kids in a school that has more resources. It may take money to educate, but it doesn't take money to learn.
