Ms. B. Robert Anderson Middle School
Anderson, SC Grades 6-8

My class this year consists of sixth grade students with learning disabilities at a large middle school. These students are in a self-contained setting, meaning that their learning disabilities necessitate a smaller class size, direct instruction, a modified curriculum, and an adjusted pace in order to acquire new skills and information. This school is located in a high-poverty area of the city. With statewide school budget cuts, our students especially are not getting the resources they need to access the regular education curriculum.

This grant proposal is written mostly with my student with a severe vision impairment in mind. This thirteen year old girl has to use a closed-circuit television even for large-print textbooks, requires at least a 36-point font for reading print, has to sit at the very front of the classroom, and requires a buddy to assist her in getting around the classroom and campus. In a very standards-based state school system, my students take weekly progress monitoring assessments and quarterly standardized tests on the computer. This student with a vision impairment uses a software program that magnifies the text on the computer screen four times as large, requiring her to literally move her head, not just her eyes, to read the classroom's 14-inch screens. This student has to use the mouse to re-adjust the screen for every four to five words. Instead of reading at least an eighty-word passage in a minute as average students without vision impairments do, my student is only able to see and read an average of thirty words per minute. Even with four times magnification, this student still has her face only two inches from the screen.

Even though my student has adapted to using the screen magnification software, using a larger computer monitor will allow her to use the software without straining and moving around. She will be able to read more fluently without having to readjust the screen as often. Not only will this new monitor make reading the computer screen easier for timed assessments, she will also be able to use the computer more efficiently for researching, typing compositions, and playing educational computer games.

Your generous contribution to this project will transform the challenge of computerized tasks from a negative challenge due to her disability to solely a positive challenge of her academic ability. Please carefully consider the difference this one product will make for this student and every other student with a visual impairment that comes behind her.
