The Devil and the AP Test

My students need 50 copies of the book "Devil in the White City" to help them flesh out their understanding of creative nonfiction in preparation for the AP Language Composition exam.

Mr. Medeiros Kauai High School
Lihue, HI Grades 9-12

Help! We have no books! Again! Well, we have books, just not the ones we need. I teach two sections of 11th grade AP English at a mid-sized public high school on the rural island of Kaua'i. Both of these classes are made up of highly motivated and intelligent young people that need a little extra information to be more fully prepared to take and pass the AP exam this Spring.

We have a sufficient variety of fiction texts; however, the students need exposure to pertinent creative nonfiction. The students must be able to make key cross-curricular connections but many of them lack the breadth and depth of prior knowledge that is necessary to be successful with such tasks. Making connections between texts and the world outside of school is not only an important part of the AP exam, but it is an integral part of being a well-rounded person. The Devil and the White City is a rich story, replete with social and political information that complements their learning in U.S. History and that will help these students on their way to building a robust bank of prior knowledge.

In order to help facilitate this "seeding" of prior knowledge, one of the things we need is 50 copies of The Devil in the White City. After all, it is difficult to read a book that we do not have. This book perfectly captures a defining moment in the history of our country at the turn of the century and pairs that time with parallel tales of a quiet young man turned serial killer and an architect rising to the promise of the industrial paradigm. Set around the Chicago World's Fair in the final moments of the 19th century, the novel explores the conflicts of modernity: the alienation of individuals in the midst of human progress and industrial growth. This novel serves as a wonderful starting place for a discussion of our place in the face of an ever changing island, state, country, and planet.

People react to great change in many ways, and one of our goals is to engender these students with the power to reflect on the world and themselves in a meaningful way. You have the power to help us prepare for the ever-looming AP exam, as well to better hone our life skills. Your generous donations can be an important part of broadening the horizons of these current, and future, students. Your help will also add to our AP library and enable us, and future classes, to consider our own position in the midst of a changing world. Mahalo.
