Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I will begin teaching a fifth grade class to students who have been in the country for less than 5 years therefore learning English and getting used to our system. Our school is located in an area where it is home to many new immigrant families.

We have a great reading program that encourages us as teachers to motivate our children into true reading. This program requires our students to meet daily in a designated area that is welcoming and inviting. Unfortunately, one needs resources to create this space. As much as I want to create this climate for my students in my classroom, I am unable to due to a lack of funds. It is not until I ran into a colleague who had a beautiful carpet from donorschoose that I decided to give it a try.

In order for me to create this ideal reading meeting area for my fifth graders I need about 30 pillows or cushions. This will be perfect for my classroom since it is not big enough to accommodate a carpet in it. With pillows, my students will be able to access them and accommodate themselves while listening to a good book or observing a motivating writing lesson.

I will really appreciate this contribution to my class. Our students all deserve to be in a comfortable learning environment that will help us to enhance their learning experiences. This project although it may sound small will mean a great deal to my students.
