Meeting Students Needs

My students with Special Needs require a sand/water sensory table.

Ms. H. Ruth Acty Elementary School
Berkeley, CA Grades PreK-2

I am fortunate to be a Support Teacher for students with Moderate/Severe disabilities in an Inclusion program. Including students with more involved disabilities is new to my elementary school. While staff is eager to learn about ways to include all students, it is difficult without the necessary resources.

Many students on my caseload seek sensory input throughout the day, i.e. touching items with different textures, running their fingers through items, feeling deep pressure on their muscles. Without appropriate outlets, students who need sensory input find alternate ways to get their needs met. Student-initiated sensory seeking activities can lead to socially stigmatizing and unsafe behaviors, like playing with mucus or jumping on other students. Students who require regular sensory input are not available to learn until their needs are met. It is important that we provide appropriate ways for students to meet their needs.

A sand/water table is an effective, safe, and fun way for students to get the sensory input that they need. The table would be filled with a variety of contents that are pleasing to the touch. In addition, a range of tools would be provided to help students explore: quantity, conservation of mass, and measuring. The table would be utilized primarily to help students calm their bodies in order to help get their brains ready to learn.

Please provide this sand/water table for the students at my school. Offering students appropriate means of getting their needs met can mean the difference between a child looking forward to school, and a child dreading school. Thank you very much.
