Gig Harbor, WA Grades 3-5

I am an Art Specialist. I teach grades K through 5. Our school is a title one school in a high-need community. The students in our school are wonderful children who deserve the best education we can offer.

During my schooling I studied many different art mediums. One of my favorites to work with is glass. My students and I are fortunate to live in Washington State where glass is being explored by great artists such as Chihuly and Lino. Last year I did some small glass tack fusing projects with the fifth graders and they loved it! This year I plan on creating an afterschool program for grades four and five in which they can learn about and create, fused and slumped glass. Since we are a low-income, title 1 school I will not be able to take money from the art room budget, as it is barley enough for supplies for the year.

To be able to offer this great opportunity to my students our classroom will need an advanced slump and fusing starter kit. This is a great way to get a few of everything we need to get started. We will also need some things like stringers and extra slump forms to be able to experiment with design elements. And lastly a glass grinder to make our designs fit together. All of these supplies will make it possible for the students to discuss and explore the art elements and design principles learned in our regular classroom. The students will be able to connect what they have learn in other art mediums to this new exciting form.

The money you donate to this program will benefit all of my fourth and fifth graders, giving them a chance to experiment in an art form that is rapidly growing in our area.
